Canon Updates

What is Canon Updating?

'Canon Updating' is when you change your characters Timeline, without restarting them, or give them knowledge from farther into their canon than the point in time they were originally taken. For example, you take your character from Episode 10. With a Canon Update, you can change that to say your character is now, technically, from Episode 30. Or you keep them from Episode 10, but then through something else called Dream Updating, you give them a dream of a scene from Episode 30, or a dream of an AU version of themselves from another canon.

Canon Update

Canon Updates can be given to a character as a means of updating what point in time they were originally taken from, without restarting them. This means that not only do they gain all knowledge and memories from their canon up to their new point in time, but they also retain all memories from Rivelata.

When characters are being Canon Updated, they will be absent from Rivelata for One Week. This means the character will not be able to write in the journals, or participate in logs for the duration of the week that they are Canon Updating. The reason for this being that for the Canon Update they have returned to their canon. Once a week is up(no matter how much time has passed in canon, be it two days or a year), the Character will return to the island the same way they first arrived: on the boat ~~bitch~~. The Character will return with all their memories of Rivelata.

You may update your character with another Canon. For example, if your character originally came from an Anime timeline, but you want to canon update them for a Manga timeline, you may do so. However, the two series must be similar, and there must not be too many differences between the Anime and Manga up to the point you have originally taken them from.

Only ten characters at a time may be Canon Updating. This may change when the amount of characters in Rivelata increases. Only one character per mun may be updated in a Month. Once a character has been Canon Updated, they cannot be Canon Updated again for Two months.

Dream Update

Dream Updates can be given to a character as a means of giving your character knowledge of a scene from their Canon, without actually changing the timeline that they were originally taken from. A character can only have a Dream Update once a month, and only three characters per mun in one month.

Dream updates can be anywhere from one minute long to fifteen minutes long.

Dream Updates can be of any one of the following:

❶ A memory from further in their Canon than they were originally taken → This is a memory they would have experienced firsthand in their future Canon. The dream will be from their own Point of View.

❷ A memory they already have, from someone else's POV → This is a dream of a memory they already have but it's from someone else's perspective, or from the sidelines(out of body experience, except it's a dream!). To be clear, this can include a memory they already have, or a memory they gained through dream ❶ or ❸.

❸ A memory from an AU version of the character → This includes Manga versus Anime, or any other incarnations in movies, cartoons and side-universe comics. Again, these visions are from your characters Point of View.

October 4th - 31st

Trick or treat! But it can't be much of a party without costumes, right? Keep an eye on your doorsteps these next few weeks, aspiring trick or treaters. There may be a gift or two.

Oh, and what is a proper Halloween without legends? Especially ghost stories, and everyone loves a ghost story, right?

And on the note of ghosts...a poem, from us to you:

September 2009

September 2nd - 30th

The island itself is at unease... Earthquakes--some weak and some strong, will be commonplace this month. The reason is unknown for now...but it's certainly an unusual occurrence. Even the natives seem confused.

September 15th

The King is planning something...however, his intentions don't seem to be with ill-intent. A pleasant surprise has been planned: a beautiful ball, hosted by the lovely Madam. For once, no one died in the making of this ball.

September 16th - 30th
When does the dream end, and the nightmare begin? Everyone is plagued by nightmares this month...nightmares that manifest themselves in the real world.

August 2009

August 3rd - 10th
Every visitor and native to Rivelata has a story to tell, but they...perhaps did not intend for it to be told in such a manner. The trickster god is up to his old habits again: characters will walk around with voices narrating their every move.

August 12th - 19th
We are young
Heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love is a battlefield

Hannike, the Goddess of Love and twin to the Goddess Cela, visits the island for a while. Unfortunately, the lack of romanticism grates on her nerves, and so she creates her own entertainment. The denizens of Rivelata will believe they are in various romance novel stereotypes for this week.

August 24th - 31st
The world will change around you for a little while--to some, this will be nostalgic and familiar. To others, an exotic new land awaits. As a gift, Hannike transforms the island into another world. However, it seems she may be hiding something...

July 2009

July 1st - 8th
After the invasion, things are pretty banged up. It's a time to relax, enjoy the peace, the weather and fix up what's been damaged.

July 9th - 16th
When we are dreaming alone it is only a dream. When we are dreaming with others, it is the beginning of reality. The young god of dreams, Aisling, will give a selected few beautiful dreams this week--an apology, perhaps, for the invasion.

July 19th - 24th
King Alastair has announced a celebration for this week! Merriment abounds as the city is transformed into a magnificent carnival. Enjoy the street performers, games, food and of course, free booze!

July 27th - 31st
Don't you miss your home? Or wonder what's going on? There's been a couple of disappearances--and in some cases, people falling into deep, dream filled sleep. How they will return, or if they'll return is anyone's guess...it's possible that, for once, they've returned home. But why now?

June 2009

June 6th
The reason for the mysterious soldiers becomes clear when a new arrival is revealed. This man is Prince Alastair--now King of Rivelata, from the far-off country of Mirande. He claims that he only wants to restore order and peace to Rivelata, but is this really the case?

June 9th
An explosion rocks the city in the middle of the night: one of the laboratories belonging to the family of Lady Elise Blombrenn has been destroyed. Apparently this explosion was rigged, but this information is unknown. It was certainly an odd and dangerous way to express discontent, but no one was harmed...

June 10th - 13th
The prankster god Egil has changed the water into wine. Affected characters will be somewhere between tipsy and flat-out wasted for these three days.

June 14th - 17th
It seems like Egil isn't done yet! Characters will wake up on the 14th with a glowing star above their heads. This star reflects the mood of the person.

June 18th
A supernova bathes the island in light, shooting stars crash to the ground, and a young boy falls from the stars. He seems harmless enough, but the Goddess Cela appears to know him. Maybe there's more to the boy than meets the eye.

June 22 - 28th
Monsters from everyone's words have invaded Rivelata! This attack happened rather suddenly, and no one knows for certain who or what is responsible for it. It really does seem like a nightmare...

An extension of the Applications page, this is the OC (Original Character) Applications page. Please be sure to read everything in the Important Information box before applying for your OC! As with the normal applications, sometimes we ask for revisions, please don't be offended! The four types of responses (Accepted, Clarification, Re-Application, Rejected) you will get still apply here.

Application Screening Note: Rejected Applications will be screened by the moderators after the rejection comment has been posted. Applications which require Clarifications are left unscreened, unless they reach the point of being Rejected. In addition, when players drop characters, their applications will also be screened. Thus all visible applications only represent the current Rivelata OC cast.

Important Information

OC Application Rules

1. Only players who have been in the game for a minimum of three months may apply for an OC.

2. You must also read the Story & Setting page, in order to familiarize yourself with Rivelata's history and culture.

3. The character must be a native to Rivelata. We will not be accepting any alternate universe OCs.

4. This should go without saying, but once you get accepted, keep them in-character. While we do understand that OCs have a lot of room for development within a game and that they are your creation, that does not mean that it's okay to disregard your character's application/previous development and run off in any which direction you please. Treat them like you'd treat a canon character and think "is this something this character would do?" first.

5. In relation to the previous rule, please, no Mary Sues. That's a given though, and the mods will never accept these characters anyway.

Mini FAQ

• Can my character be a god/noble/royalty/etc?
No. If needed, those characters will be NPC'd.

• Can my character know magic?
Certainly! Magic isn't restricted just to the Gods, you know. However, the character's power level must be reasonable. Just as canon powerful characters have their powers dampened, OCs are also not allowed to reach high levels of power.

• So what's the deal with natives and the journals?
Basically, our story is this: the natives simply didn't need them. They received information from word of mouth and besides, they know the land much better than the Off Worlders anyway. However, it appears that something has become keen on further connecting the natives to the others, for lately, some natives have woken up to find their own, brand new magical journal sitting quietly somewhere in their home.

• Can my character be from somewhere else in Ce Monde?
As of right now, no, they can only be natives to Rivelata. However, this may change in the future when more of Ce Monde is revealed!

• How many OCs can I have?
The current limit is two, and you must wait at least one month after applying for the first OC before you may apply for the second.

Note: In the comment title, put "OC Application for" and the character's name. It will aid the moderators if you do NOT include a #/# format at the end of each comment and instead keep the same title for each comment. When you reply to moderator comments, please keep the "Re: ABCNXYZ" format in the comment title.

General Guidelines

• Watch your spelling, grammar, and capitalization. Consider reading over everything several times and using a spell check before submitting.
• Format your application so it is easily readable. Double space between paragraphs, don't give huge blocks of text.
• Pay attention to the minimum requirements for certain application sections, listed below. You will be asked to revise them if you don't meet them the first time.

EMAIL/MESSENGER(S): Emails are required, because we need this to contact you if issues come up. Additionally, please list your usernames on AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, whatever you happen to use. Not required, but recommended.

TIMEZONE: The timezone you live in.

CHARACTER

NAME(S): Your character's name and any important aliases.
PB: The person who will be representing your character's appearance, if applicable.
OCCUPATION: What do they do for a living (if applicable)? Job titles are preferred, as a description should go in Background.

BACKGROUND HISTORY:
As stated in the rules for applying for OCs, you must read the Story & Setting page; and this would be the section that that knowledge comes into play. Using the information you have from both that page and your knowledge from just playing in the game thus far, create a reasonable and believable history for your character, including important experiences and turning points in their life. Things to consider adding in this section: family ties, what they for a living, general lifestyle, etc. Backgrounds should be a minimum of 500 words.

PERSONALITY:
What traits make your character unique? How do they interact with the Off Worlders? The other natives? Is your character more or less mature than their actual age, or even the age they appear to be? What kind of morals do they have? You should include whatever is most integral to the character. This section should be 200 words, but preferably more. This is one of the sections that we pay the most attention to, so don't be afraid to go into detail!

STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES:
This is an important sub-category of Personality when it comes to OCs, for it will both get you thinking and help convince us that your character has enough depth to be accepted. Is your character a natural born leader? Are they a master blacksmith? Do they find it hard to socialize? Are they horribly stubborn, a master of lies, or one of the best parental figures in Rivelata? Please do your best to keep your character balanced and believable -- remember, not everyone is perfect.

SPECIAL ABILITIES:
Does your character have any magical/superhuman ability (i.e. a practitioner of magic or stronger than the average person)? If so, please explain how they acquired it. "A mysterious event in the past" won't cut it for this section.

     You're rocking back and forth as waves lap against wood. Your eyes open to view the clear blue sky above, littered with clouds carrying rain. Where are you? How have you come to be here, and why? Voices interrupt your heavy thoughts -- they're all around you. Suddenly, you're not alone anymore, and everyone around you is just as lost.

     You can see a city enclosed by the deep greens of a lush jungle, with the buildings closest to it dappled and framed with various tropical flora of impressive beauty. There is a vast expanse of white beach and rising cliff-faces all along the coast before you. Rich architecture line the streets of the port city, some colourful and vivid, others dark and in disrepair. Within the streets, the people are just as varied: poor walking among the middle classes, perhaps even a nobleman with his guards. Guards. Maybe they have the answers you seek?

     The guards explain where you are: Rivelata, once the home and dominion of the Child-Queen Immaculada, spirited away in the night, and once the prison of Zikhadhara, the "Godking." With the disappearance of both, Rivelata was left without a leader -- that was, until King Alastair of the far-off country Mirande came to take control. Rumors flutter through the air of the streets, hinting at hidden motives. Had this King truly only come to not only protect Rivelata, but hunt its treasures? Or is there more to him and his goals than meets the eye?

     Or is there, perhaps, more to Rivelata than ever thought possible?

     Gods. Gold. Magic. Possibly a way home. You'll have to search on your own...

Hiatus & Drop

Go on a hiatus, or drop. You are still allowed to post in rivelataooc with notifications for other players, but this is so the mods have a record of all hiatuses and drops and don't have to sift through the OOC community to figure out where everyone is. If you are looking for a drop that is over one month old, then you should check on the Master Hiatus/Drop List. Going on a hiatus is also the only way to avoid being cut due to lack of response during an Activity Check.

Hiatus

Hiatus Form & Guidelines

• The maximum hiatus period with no definite return date is one month.
• You can only hiatus past one month if you have a definite return date, and even then it cannot exceed two months.
• Once you have returned from hiatus, you may not hiatus again for the next two weeks unless it is completely unavoidable.
• Extensions (with a good reason) can be requested.

Dropping

Drop Form & Guidelines

• Please remove yourself from rivelata, rivelatalogs, and rivelataooc
• The player dropping the character(s) may choose a fate for their character to 'disappear' from the game.
• Once a character is dropped, they are considered lost or dead if a fate is not provided by the player dropping them. They are free game to be murdered in that event.
• If a character(s) has been dropped/removed by inactivity, the player who dropped the character is required to wait at least one week if they wish to reapply/reserve the dropped/removed character.

This Month's Casualties

An unclaimed character is free game for any current player/character to claim their fate, be that death, disappearance, or otherwise. Leave a comment on this entry with the name of the character that you wish to claim and the moderators will take care of updating the character's new fate.

Premise

The Story So Far

Many years ago, explorers from the east, known as the Old World in these times, came to the compelling and bountiful New one. It turned out to be a land of danger and beauty alike, vast and unexplored, a new frontier to humble men. It was on the coast that they founded the luxurious city of Rivelata - "revealed" - and severed all ties with the world of yore.

What they found in the New World's lush jungles was something beyond the reaches of even the most fantastical imaginations of their time. It is said that when the young Immaculada discovered the Garnet of Journeys, God had looked down on this New World, and chose her to be its ambassador. It burned her hands and took her mortality, but after that day, people began to come to Rivelata, people not from any other world they had ever heard of. These lost souls, dubbed "Arrivals" or "Off Worlders", taken from their homes, were very confused. As she had been the one to awaken the crystal, it was she who spoke with them - the original immigrants made her their Queen and the first wave of people that populated the city began to create the foundations of the city as it stands today - the walls, the castle, the park, and all the streets. The original immigrants questioned the action, some wondered if she had some measure of control over these people's minds, but none would speak publicly against one with such a power.

About six generations later, however, the people of Rivelata have become accustomed to all the newcomers on their land. It would also appear that after everything that has happened in the past year, that the Child-Queen Immaculada's reign is rapidly coming to an end. Oh, how things change.

But that is only the beginning of a new chapter in Rivelata's history; the winds of change are in motion...

Arrival/Beach Area

Beach (Sea Level) • White sand and pristine waters make for a scenic opening to your stay here in Rivelata, but if you turn back towards the Ridges, you'll also spy a Mysterious Haze. It is coloured cyan-blue, forest-green, and dirt-brown -- but that's all the information anyone can seem to gather. As the shoreline spreads along the coast, you'll find things become quite rocky, that the jungle gets thicker, the short cliffs begin to rise, and the rocks become covered in a slick ocean film. Who knows how many explorers fell into the bay this way?

City Area

1A/1B: Market District • Lined with shops on either side of a main thoroughfare, this is the place to get whatever you need (if it even exists here)! Signs hang out over the streets with ornate picture displays of each shop's kind of product or trade. But this isn't purely the locals -- some of the Off Worlders also run their very own businesses! It's a wonderful place; but that doesn't erase those dark looking alleyways or those shady looking characters who won't hesitate to sell you something a little bit different from the norm.

2: Warehouse District • For the most part, many of the warehouses here don't seem to really be in use (although there are some larger businesses in this area). It overlooks the Boardwalk in one direction, the Housing District in another (and beyond it the Jungle, but it's quite a view!), leaving the Market District further up the slopes.

3: Airship Crash • When the pirates arrived in Rivelata, their ship, The Nimirum, accidentally crashed into the marketplace. While the ship itself has since been dismantled, there are still lasting scars on the city's ground and buildings where the event happened.

4: Housing Slums • Like any city, there is an area people call the Slums. Rivelata's is located at the base of the Housing District, and there tends to be a lot of natives renting their houses out to the Off Worlders in these parts.

5: Housing District • This is where most other worldly and wealthy citizens reside. If you look hard enough it's possible to find some nice houses for sale or rooms for rent, so you probably want to hit up here first. And depending on where you snag a place, you could get a stunning view of the ocean, the jungle or maybe just the town itself. Either way, being in such a lovely, warm, tropical place has to be fantastic, right?

6: Park • Ah, the park. It's really quite the fascinating place, you know. There's a modern style playground cobbled together from what appear like some crudely-welded metal beams and such, but that doesn't bother the children in the slightest. Many beautiful flowers and trees also grow in this magical place and the bell atop the Church of New World Religion is quite easy to spot. It's truly a stunning place, if not a little mysterious by how easily negative feelings are eased if you're here, but seem to slowly return as you move away from the area.

7: Professional District • The Church of New World Religion marks off the start of the Professional District, a place dedicated to the things that didn't quite fit in the Marketplace. The most well known facilities include the theatre, music hall, the Husband's Alley brothel, library, orphanage, bathhouse and clinic but if you just look around you're sure to find some other interesting things!

The Castle • Elegant, grand and regal is Rivelata's Castle. It is home to Queen Immaculada and other royalists, and very rarely have citizens, natives and Off Worlders alike, been permitted on the castle grounds. It sits atop the highest point in the city and close to the jungle, surrounded by strong walls.

Setting

The Bay

Beautiful, vast and alluring is Rivelata's bay -- an estuary in fact, meaning that a collection of rivers and streams have a free connection to the sea. There is also quite the colourful ecosystem living in this area! Bright tropical creatures (like clownfish, angelfish, jellyfish just to name a few) dart around the coral reefs and sea anemones happily in the sun -- or not too happily when they're being pursued by sharp toothed predators like sharks and barracuda!

Of course, these are all normal things to find in tropical waters. But, as you've probably guessed, Rivelata isn't exactly a normal place. Sometimes you'll find something you recognize, but from a slightly different environment. But even more mysterious than that is how in amongst these familiar sights, there are things that no one but the locals recognize, despite the many different worlds that people come from. Some of these things are friendly and timid -- others violent and ugly. But you shouldn't worry too much; the nastier ones tend to live out further than most people dare to venture.

Oh, and don't forget about those scaly, flesh eating creatures (aka Sea Monsters) that spend their time out in the deeper waters. True, lately they've been rather quiet and you'd have to get a boat out to reach them, but that doesn't mean that their teeth won't hurt ripping into you.

The City

A lot of the urbanization going on within the city makes it a little hard for vegetation to grow; but that's not to say that it's completely void of some very lush trees, exotic plants (both flowering and not) or sweet smelling herbs. One place guaranteed to have all these things would be the Park, an almost magical place for children to play and people to admire. The Park and other places of the city are better described within the Tour of Rivelata section on this page, so read through that if you'd like to know more! Hopefully the visuals of the streets and waterside bungalows are some help as well.

Due to all the people about, not a whole lot of animals poke around often. There are the odd cases of a jungle animal wandering around the streets for a little bit, and it's actually fairly common to see a toucan, macaque, parrot or some other exotic bird sitting in your backyard, but mostly it's just harmless little critters and insects that flit about the city area. Oh, and don't worry about those vicious Sky Snakes. They only terrorized the city once.

The Jungle

Now this is where things start to get a little interesting.

As with any jungle, it is home to many exotic animals (like lemurs, snakes, frogs, panthers, sloths, parrots and macaques to name only a few) and is, of course, also the home of both natural beauty and danger. But there are stranger things going on within this specific jungle -- things that are shrouded with mystery yet.

The most common Rivelata-specific animal would have to be the Shadhavar; a flesh eating unicorn. Sky Snakes have been known to roam the skies above the deeper jungle, giant Venus fly traps are just hiding behind the most innocent looking of ferns, and all sorts of lovely things like that are lurking around every corner. For a long time, the jungle was ruled by the "God King" Zikhadhara, a large and fearsome jaguar god who stayed near the ancient temple he called home, a mysterious place covered in vines on the outside and littered with deadly booby traps on the outside. While Zikhadhara is out of the picture these days, it's still not exactly recommended to explore the temple.

There are certainly many dark secrets hidden within it's depths. Gods? Treasure? Unspeakable monsters? Salvation? Hah! That's the thing about secrets -- no one knows.

The Jungle con't. (Places of Interest)

Egil's Chessboard • Rivelata's resident trickster god, Egil, has been busy! The little devil has taken a large section of the jungle and transformed it into an oversized chessboard that plays itself every other hour. Feel free to interact with the pieces -- but as soon as you enter a square with a piece already on it, your clothes will be magically transformed into that of the piece you are now representing, you'll be forced into the game and you can only leave once the game is finished. Oh, and don't think you can cheat your way out of it. The board is much too strict for that.

Be careful! Getting knocked out of the game means getting knocked unconscious for two hours.

Bloodstone Springs • Strikingly strange and beautiful is the newly formed Bloodstone Springs, created by yet another goddess currently watching over Rivelata. With the name on this spring, it isn't hard to guess why exactly the water is tinted red and runs thicker than water is supposed to. However, the blood drinkers of Rivelata will no doubt realize that it isn't real blood that pours from this spring, but instead a very convincing and satisfying blood substitute. And despite the odd nature of this place, it is actually a thank you gift, as it was a vampire who had defeated Rivelata Zikhadhara for good.

There is a small path of Bloodstone that leads to the beginning of the spring, where the water is exiting the rockface. However, it can be difficult to find and even follow if you don't know what you're looking for.

Technology

Needless to say, but Rivelata isn't incredibly tech-savvy. There are many little fishing boats at the docks, horse and buggies in the streets and old fashioned clothes on the people -- so yes, the basics of a 16th century town certainly apply; but really? It's more of a base, considering all the supernatural and unusual things about Rivelata. There are no iPods, TVs, digital cameras or anything like that available, but there is magic, odd humanoid species and a firm belief in the Gods. It's not like home to most Off Worlders, however, all the knowledge they bring with them is beginning to make its mark. A modern setting will never be achieved, of course, but some of its small comforts can.

Although the time period technically shouldn't allow it, Rivelata actually does have electricity. The Garnet is what allows this, and it is said that it channels the power for it from dormant volcanoes (most underground or beyond Zikhadhara's temple); although it's also possible that the Garnet relies on nothing but it's own unique power. Who really knows with this place?
